A Home Textiles List for Your Trousseau: What Do You Really Need?

When preparing your trousseau, you may want to buy every beautiful item you see. A list drawn up with your needs, your everyday habits and your storage space in mind helps you make more balanced choices.

Preparing a trousseau (çeyiz) isn’t just about shopping. It is about imagining the colours of the home you will set up, its daily life and the time you will spend together.

Amid all this excitement, it can be easy to buy lots of products for the same need. Yet a well-prepared trousseau goes beyond filling cupboards; it is made up of pieces you will actually use.

First, write down what your home needs

How many beds will be in use? How will you host guests? How often will you be able to wash and dry the laundry? How much space do you have in your cupboards?

Decide how many of each item to buy based on these questions. There is no single trousseau quantity that applies to every home.

A basic list for the bedroom

To begin with, you might consider these product groups:

  • Duvet cover sets that fit your duvet.
  • Sheets that fit your bed.
  • Pillowcases that fit your pillows.
  • A mattress protector, depending on your needs.
  • A piqué blanket or a blanket, depending on the season.

Check whether the duvet cover set includes a sheet. Write the contents of each pack on your list so that you don’t buy the same piece again without realising.

A basic list for the bathroom

For personal use, you might think about bath towels, hand and face towels, a bathrobe if you like, and a suitable bath mat.

When deciding on quantities, account for the spares you will need while others are in the wash, as well as those in use. Before buying lots of guest towels, prioritise the towels you use every day.

A basic list for the kitchen and dining table

Kitchen towels, tea towels and tablecloths that suit the size of your table make a practical start.

When choosing a tablecloth, think not only about the width and length of the table, but also about how far you want it to hang over the edges. You can add decorative pieces once the basics are covered.

Think about colours together

You don’t have to buy every item in the same colour. Choosing a few main colours and picking patterns that complement them makes it easier to use the pieces together.

For sheets and pillowcases in particular, it can be practical to choose colours that can be used with different sets.

Allocate your budget by how often things are used

Give more attention to the size, content and care of the items you will use every day. Pieces that will only be used on special occasions can be added as the need arises.

What matters in your trousseau is not how many pieces it contains, but that each piece has a place in your life. At Serra Home, we can go over your needs together as you prepare your list.
