Choosing a Mattress Protector: Size, Mattress Height and What You Need It For
When buying a mattress protector, looking only at the width and length of the mattress may not be enough. Its protective features, the mattress height and the care conditions also matter for the right choice.
We carefully choose the pattern of a duvet cover and the colour of a sheet. A mattress protector, on the other hand, is one of the important parts of a made-up bed, even though it mostly stays out of sight.
To choose a mattress protector that suits your needs, first decide what you expect from it.
Not every mattress protector is waterproof
Products with different features can be found under the name “mattress protector”. Some offer a quilted layer that helps protect the mattress in everyday use, while others also include a layer designed to stop liquids from passing through.
If you need liquid protection, look for this to be clearly stated in the product description. Don’t decide only by looking at the product’s thickness or its top surface.
Take all three measurements of the mattress
As well as the width and length, measure the height of the mattress. For models whose sides wrap around the mattress, information about the suitable height is important.
For example, for a 160 × 200 cm mattress you need to look for a product with the same width and length; you should also check whether the product suits the height of your mattress.
If there is a thick mattress topper on it, think about which layers the mattress protector will wrap around when you take your measurements.
Look at how it is fastened
Models with elasticated corners and models that wrap around the whole mattress are used differently. Look at the fastening method in the product photos.
A mattress protector that sits neatly on the mattress makes it easier to put on the sheet and to use the bed every day.
Assess the top surface and the lower layers separately
The product’s top surface may be cotton; however, this does not mean that all of its layers are made of cotton. Look for information about the filling, the base and the liquid-protective layer, if there is one.
The comfort you feel while sleeping can vary with the construction of the mattress protector, the sheet, the mattress and the conditions in the room. So don’t settle for the words “cotton” or “waterproof” alone.
Check the care instructions
Suitable washing and drying conditions are important, especially for layered products. Machine washability, suitability for a tumble dryer and the permitted temperature should be checked on the product label.
Before you buy, look for answers to these four questions: Does the size fit? Does it give the protection I want? How does it attach to the mattress? Can I care for it at home?
Choosing the right mattress protector makes a detail you never see, but use every day, suit your needs.
