What Should You Look for When Buying Towels? Is Softness Enough on Its Own?
A towel whose colour you like and whose texture you love should make you happy in everyday use, too. Let’s look together at the small details you can pay attention to when choosing a towel, from the fabric to the size.
When we touch a towel, the first thing we notice is its softness. It feels lovely in our hands, and if we like the colour too, we are close to making our choice. Yet we only really get to know a towel at home, after the first use and the first wash.
To find a towel you will love using, you need to look at a few more qualities besides softness.
First, think about where you will use it
What you expect from a towel for drying your hands may not be the same as what you expect from one you wrap yourself in after a bath. For a towel you will put in your gym bag, lightness and taking up little space come first, while at home you might prefer a larger, fuller towel.
Starting your shopping with the question “How will I use this towel?” instead of “Which towel is the best?” makes the choice easier.
Read the fabric content
Check the product label for the proportions of the fibres used. Cotton is a fibre commonly used in towels; however, a label that simply says “cotton” does not show that the product is made entirely of cotton.
Likewise, two towels both being 100% cotton does not mean they will feel exactly the same. The yarn, the weave and the processes applied during production affect the product’s texture and how it performs in use.
Don’t make softness your only criterion
It matters that a towel feels pleasant against your skin. But how it absorbs water, how long it takes to dry after use and whether its care suits you should also be considered.
In a shop you can feel the softness by touching it; for absorbency and performance after washing, however, you need to look at the product information and the manufacturer’s descriptions.
Check the size and the stitching
Go by the size given in centimetres rather than the phrase “bath towel” in the product name. Assess the dimensions with how you want to use the towel in mind.
Also check the edges for fraying, uneven stitching or snagged threads. This quick check helps you spot flaws that might otherwise be missed while shopping.
Find out the care conditions before you buy
A towel you use often should also have care requirements that fit your daily life. Look at the washing and drying instructions; if you use a tumble dryer in particular, check that the product is suitable for it.
A short checklist:
- Does it suit what I will use it for?
- Is it big enough?
- Is the fabric content clearly stated?
- Is the stitching neat?
- Do the care conditions suit me?
At Serra Home, you can weigh up these details along with colour and texture when choosing your towels. Because a beautiful towel is one you are glad you chose every time you pick it up at home.
